When we look at this month’s highlights, it’s clear how far we’ve come from the kind of education many of us grew up with — one centered on memorization, repetition, and just learning facts. For much of the last century, classrooms were designed to mirror the needs of the Industrial Age: orderly, quiet, and focused on routine. Thankfully, today’s learning is no longer about sitting silently and listening to lectures. It’s about engaging with the world and its everyday challenges.

Head of School's Message

Dear FAA Community,

When we look at this month’s highlights, it’s clear how far we’ve come from the kind of education many of us grew up with — one centered on memorization, repetition, and just learning facts. For much of the last century, classrooms were designed to mirror the needs of the Industrial Age: orderly, quiet, and focused on routine. Thankfully, today’s learning is no longer about sitting silently and listening to lectures. It’s about engaging with the world and its everyday challenges.

Preschoolers are exploring the world through sound and sensory experiences. Fifth graders are choosing their own topics to demonstrate academic and bilingual maturity through their Exit Projects. Middle schoolers are diving into diplomacy and science, all while learning the value of collaboration.

All of this reflects the power of interdisciplinary learning. The world isn’t divided into boxes labeled “math,” “reading,” or “science” — everything is connected, and so is the way we learn.

Warm regards,

Anne-Sophie Gueguen

Coast to Coast Science Elective

Students from San Diego French American School visited our campus for an engaging week of scientific exploration and collaboration on our common theme “Fresh Waters”.
Together, students toured the Veolia water treatment plant, explored wetland ecosystems at DeKorte Park, and visited the Paterson Great Falls to observe the power and impact of natural waterways. They also worked in mixed teams on a video project highlighting the importance of wetland conservation. The visit concluded with meaningful experiences at the 9/11 Memorial and Liberty State Park.

New Wet and Dry Labs to Support Modern Science Learning

As we move away from a traditional model of teaching chemistry, biology, and physics as separate, year-long subjects, we are embracing a more integrated and hands-on approach to science. To support this shift, we will build two distinct labs: a wet lab, equipped for experiments involving liquids, chemicals, and biological materials, and a dry lab, designed for engineering, robotics, electronics, and data analysis. This dual-lab setup allows students to explore scientific concepts across disciplines, mirroring the way science is practiced in the real world — through experimentation, design, and collaboration
